Snoop Dogg’s Bible of Love Hits Stride After 7 Weeks on Top of Billboard Charts

Snoop Dogg is proving the naysayers wrong with his chart topping Gospel debut album Bible of Love. Bible of Love opened at No. 1 on Billboard Gospel Album charts and seven weeks later is still at the top spot. Since making his rounds during the 2018 Super Bowl Gospel Celebration and the 33rd Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards, Snoop has receive both push back and praise.

While Snoop is the latest artist to ignite a strong response from gospel audiences, artists like Lecrae have had similar experiences. Having stated during the course of his musical vocation that he is Christian, but not a Christian rapper, Lecrae’s stance holds similarities to Snoop’s; to not embrace the title of gospel artist but to speak to the people by way of gospel inspiration is not an indictment. But in many instances the court has spoken and when it did, Snoop was ready to state his rebuttal:

“I thought church was supposed to welcome sinners,” he said. “If the church was full of saints it wouldn’t be right. So if you finding somebody trying to find their way back home, the natural thing to do is be warm and welcoming, open your arms and say ‘Brother, we accept you for who you are and what you going through. Come as you are.’”

After his Stellar Award performance In the interview below, Snoop addresses the criticisms of his foray into gospel music head on:

The album, a 32-song collection, also reached high on Nielson Soundscan and broke the record for most streams of a gospel album in its first week with over 3 million streams. The fact that legendary and widely accepted Gospel singers are featured throughout the Bible of Love may attest to Snoop’s sincerity and reach as a musical artist. The album features The Clark Sisters, Rance Allen, Kim Burrell, Tiye Tribbett, Mary Mary, Faith Evans and a more. One thing is for sure, Bible of Love is reaching ears and one is to wonder is Bible of Love’s reach surpassing the traditional gospel audience?
